Council woman Alicia Leyva Stevens was raised in Sunland Park, NM and is a graduate of Gadsden HS. She received her Bachelor of Science from NMSU and her teaching certification, and her Master of Science from UTEP. She’s been married to her husband Joe for 33 years. Together they have 6 children, 10 grandchildren, and have lived in Anthony for 11 years. She retired after a 44 year teaching career with her last years at Franklin HS, Santa Teresa HS, and Alta Vista Early College HS. Her career accomplishments include sponsoring and mentoring many students in both high performing and low performing schools to qualify for and place in the National Science Symposium and the International Science and Engineering Fair. She was also honored as teacher of the year for all three schools mentioned and selected to various school and district leadership roles, wrote and applied for several grants and received funding, started new school clubs to promote and develop student leaders as well as tutoring and mentoring thousands of students throughout her career. As a Master Teacher she was a leader in district curriculum writing, a leader in student performance for the state mandated tests, and mentored new teachers to the profession. She is looking forward to serving the Town of Anthony as a council woman with the same energy and passion she had as a teacher.
